Mercury outboard engines have a serial number tag that is located on the swivel bracket (port or starboard); or, check the instruction plate, located between the thumb screws above the steering tube. The top number on the plate is the serial number, and the number directly beneath it is the four-digit year of manufacture.

Your serial number or model number can be found on the engine's mid-section. Often this plate is also marked with the engine's year too.

• The first serial number sold in a year becomes the beginning serial number. Serial numbers between that year's beginning serial number and the next fall into the same year. • If the model year doesn't appear on yours, the serial number, also located on this plate, is the key. The Serial Number If your Mercury outboard is a 2006 model, or newer, you can use the online Mercury Parts Catalog to look up the model year.
• Find Mariner Outboards Serial Number. For Mariner, the serial number will be on the top outside edge of the clamp bracket, or on top of the swivel bracket on either the port or starboard side. Find MerCruiser Serial Number. For engines, the MerCruiser serial number could be in a couple of places; either near the starter, by the flywheel housing, or on the rocker arm or flame arrestor cover.

Johnson has changed how they indicate year in the model number several times. Depending on the year range your motor falls into, you will find your Johnson engine year information differently.

1980-Present
Engines since 1980 use a two letter code at the end of the model number based on the following key :

For example the 'CE' at the end of 100STLCE indicate that the engine is from '89'.

1969-1979
The actual year is found in the model number, not the serial number.
For example, 150TXL78 is a 150hp engine from 1978. 65ESLR72 would be from 1972.

Evinrude changed how they indicate year in the model number in 1980. Depending on the whether your engine is from before or after that year determins how you will find your Evinrude engine year information.
